Hi Everyone
I'm planning for my first 2-way radio purchase. I've seen many in the
market, and I figured out that there are the following major players:
1) Motorola
2) Cobra
3) Uniden

I searched the web for some reviews, and in Amazon for example, I saw
that there was high rating for Cobra LI-6500 compared to the Motorola
T9500.

So, I thought turing to a community that is more involved in such
products to hear the experts opinion. My usage is going to be
basically for picnics or when going in convoys. It will also be used
in Urban areas but not intensively.

Looking forward for your feedback. Thanks in advance

You might want to check the Google archives for this group. It's
beenvery quiet. This is from John awhile back:

Reviews of Motorola T9500 and Midland GXT850 FRS/GMRS Radios

I reviewed and posted the results of my reviews on this site here:

There is also something called eXRS that might fit your needs.

Well, I'll give you mine despite not being an expert. For convoys, I'd
suggest CB radios with magmount antennas on the roof. Although you'll
have some range from the FRS/GMRS antenna on a handheld, it will be
seriously liimited. Depending on where you live, you'll get lots of
helpful information on CBs from truckers that won't be on FRS/GMRS.

For picnics and city areas, just about any FRS/GMRS radio will do.
Instead of picking by brand, I'd pick by size and ease of use. Carrying
around a big handheld can be a burden for some people; choose a smaller
radio for convenience. At picnics, range will not be an issue - you can
always just yell. :->

FRS/GMRS radios have compromised antennas that don't work as well as
the rubber ducks on ham or GMRS only handhelds that have removable
antennas -- and the manufacturers' rubber ducks suck. The nonremovable
antennas are even worse. Using the radios at picnics will not be an
issue, but in convoys you may find the restrictions in range to be a
problem.
