While it says nowhere it's specifically MURS, it is vhf, so most likely it
is. Seems to me stewart was wishing for something along this line at one
point?
Looks like a Garmin MAP60 converted a little....

I don't know how you find the FCC ID on a product that's not shipping
yet, but if you can track that down, the application paperwork should
give frequencies.

A lojack for your pooch. I like it. Can I get one for my kids? Have you seen
the Disney and Sprint offers that use cell phone GPS that tell you where the
phone is?

I'd heard, at a radio shack (so take that for as little as it may be worth)
that in order to 'track' the sprint phone, the parent would have to text
the childs phone, and then it would respond with location also. (via
mapping either on phone, or online).
They said it had to be initiated like that, to prevent stalking?...
Anyways, it's what I heard. Never had a use for it on the phones, so wasnt
real concerned.

This device is nice tho. And the Receiver can be used as a standalone GPS.

Sounds good, except I can already hear the catcalls; "MURS is going to
the dogs".

Don't be so sure. Just a few weeks ago, I saw a Galaxy "cb radio" for
sale in the store. (not a truck stop).

It operates on something like 28 mhz instead of 27 mhz.

If I hadn't just happened to read the cb newsgroup a few days before
seeing it, I would never have known it was an illegal radio. I would
have thought it was a legal radio since the store was selling it and
would have bought it, provided I could afford it.

But since I did just happen to read the cb newsgroups before seeing it,
and knew what it was, I wouldn't buy it and didn't.

And even if I had of wanted it, it was too expensive for me. About two
hundred dollars.

Is it legal for hams to own one?

I'm afraid some poor unsuspecting person is going to buy it from the
store, thinking it's a legal cb. The box makes it sound like it.

As a long time owner of Garmin products, they're not likely to skirt
licensing issues.
It states it's VHF, which would cover the MURS unlicensed band.
Those Galaxys are illegal because they convert too easily to frequencies
not even licensed to hams. (Between CB and 10 meters).
Many times it's just removal of a jumper inside the radio.
They also tend to be crap, and not worthy of use on ham bands by a ham.

Galaxy *does* make a "real" CB radio.

I do agree though.... those so called "10 meter" radios are actually
designed to be modded for the illegal CB crowd....not a ham op. I don't
think any amateur operator would be caught dead with one.
