You'll get 20 miles if you hold one hand in the air, lift the other
foot off the ground, and have a tailwind blowing your signal to the
other party!

20 miles my ass! One person on the roof of a multi-story building
and another with good line of sight and maybe, if you're lucky,
you'll get more then a 7 mile surface of the earth horizon.

You can get 20 mile range if one is using a repeater and using the
unit as a GMRS radio.

Other than that, 2 miles is doing good in city environment without a
repeater.

I have used them in wooded areas. When the foliage is up, the range is
horrible. WHen the leaves fall, the range is extended greatly. You're
closer to the reality.

That's what the MURS frequencies are for, or just use 2 meters
if you have the license.

Yeah what Scott says! I go Quail hunting every once and while, and we
used the FRS Radios ONCE! Everybody uses the VHF hand held radios with
the light weight head set and the VOX operation.

The VHF Radios are put on "Extra Low Power" for transmitting and work
very well. This saves the battery and lasts all day. We made contacts
with each other as far as a mile to two miles away, and even went up on
a local repeater frequency talked with the locals. They also think the
FRS radios are junk.

Most 2 meter VHF radios can be modified for the MURs channels.

if you are going to break the aw why not just break the law and use
GMRS radios in the first place

Yes foilage and UHF frequencies do not make happy partners. Even VHF
frequencies can be greatly effected by trees.
